The Postmistress
has been shortlisted for the
2010 Exclusive Books Boeke Fiction Prize.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
“One of those rare books that when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it” –Kathryn Stockett,
author of The Help
Letters of love, telegrams of loss – the postmistress awaits
them all.
The wireless crackles with news of blitzed-out London and of the Second World War which is coursing through Europe, leaving destruction in its wake. Listening intently on the other side of the Atlantic, newly-wed Emma considers the fragility of her peaceful married life as America edges closer to the brink of war. As the reporter’s distant voice fills the room, she sits convincing herself that the sleepy town of Franklin must be far beyond the war’s reach.
But the life of American journalist Frankie Bard, whose voice seems so remote, will soon be deeply entangled with her own. With the delivery of a letter into the hands of postmistress Iris, the fates of these three women become irrevocably linked. But while it remains unopened, can Iris keep its truth at bay?
The Postmistress is a sweeping, romantic and harrowing tale of three unforgettable women, war torn fates and of what happens when those we love leave us behind.

It’s small enough to fit in your backpack or pocket, so whether you’re on the rocks, on the rivers or anywhere between êrens and nêrens, don’t leave home without it.
As usual, our favourite cook and life enthusiast offers you fresh angles for when you venture into the wilds. He makes sure that you have it all – the time out, the adventure, the interaction and, of course, lekker bos kos.
THE AUTHOR
Local culinary genius, Justin Bonello, is the owner of Cooked in Africa Films and host of Cooked – the popular cooking adventure television show.
Justin’s love affair with cooking and wide-open spaces began with weekends and school holidays spent in the great outdoors either on the Breede River or on the Wild Coast. He learnt to embrace the land and all that it has to offer without taking away from it anything that nature could not replenish.
Justin believes that the beauty of travel and cooking can be found in searching for fresh produce, making new friends and discovering foods you didn’t even know existed.

“You read Exhibit A. And now you’re pondering about whether to buy Tooth and Nailed for your book club? Or your twenty-something’s birthday? Well, ponder no further. Crime Beat put the bright lights in her eyes, and made Sarah Lotz answer some questions. She did. Through gritted teeth.
Crime Beat: One of the things about Tooth and Nailed that is immediately obvious, is its sense of vitality. To a degree this was the case with Exhibit A, but that book was undercut by a truly nasty incident. In a sense Tooth and Nailed is less serious, although still satiric…” To read the rest of the Q & A click on the below link

“What a pleasure to see a movie that has no special effects, no 3D glasses, monsters or aliens. “Mao’s Last Dancer” does not play out against the backdrop of an intergalactic war, an alien invasion or a sinister corporate conspiracy. It tells a story rooted in the tenacity and triumph of the human spirit…” Click on the link below to read more

This is Carli’s winning short story
Mom’s present
Mom’s birthday is over a week. I want to buy her a beautiful vase of R115 but I have only saved up R60 as I get R20 a month. I decide to do little jobs to earn more money so I can buy my mom a present. I go outside to the garage and ask Dad if I can wash the car.”Dad, may I wash the car ?””Certainly, my child. I will pay you R10. While I wash the car I make the sum. Now I have R70. I go to the neighbors next. They have a dog in need of a bath. I knock on the door.”Yes?” asks an elderly woman.”May I bath your dog?”,I ask.”Of course ,honey, of course”. Now run along. Fifi is in the backyard. I will pay you R35.”After I bathed Fifi she gave me the money. Now I have R105. I decide to go to dad again. ”Dad, can I rake the leaves?””Yes, I will pay you R10 for that.” So, after I raked the leaves I had R115.The very next day I bought the vase for mom. She said it was the best birthday present ever!
