On Friday the 5th June 2009, Penguin Books SA hosted their Penguin Walk at the Johannesburg Zoo where a 5km walk route was planned out around the animals with checkpoints put in place for everyone to collect tokens.
Â
Every Penguin company around the world agreed to put on their collective trainers and head for the streets or the hills on Friday June 5th 2009. In recognition of World Environment Day we wanted to demonstrate our commitment to making Penguin a greener company by raising money and planting trees.
Â
From the money that we raised during the Penguin Walk at the Johannesburg Zoo, Food & Trees for Africa were able to buy and donate 142 trees on behalf of Penguin to the following schools (each tree has a little tag on it saying ‘donated by Penguin Books’ ):
Â
1. Dipati Primary School (North West) – 20 trees (the trees will provide shade and greenery and have been incorporated into their science curriculum)
Â
2. Doasho High School (Limpopo) – 25 trees (school with 985 learners – 685 are orphans or vulnerable children – the trees planted will provide a barrier between the community and the school)
Â
3. Matswathaka School (Free State) – 25 trees (they provide food for 60 orphans and vulnerable children who attend the school)
Â
4. Ratanang Primary School (Northern Cape) – 20 fruit trees (they have extremely hot summers and icy winds in winters so trees will provide shade for summer and windbreakers for winter and fruit for the children)
Â
5. Amakhumbeni Farmer Community Centre (Eastern Cape) – 20 trees (the trees will make a difference to their surroundings as before it was just full of dust)
Â
6. Umthawelanga Senior Secondary School (Eastern Cape) – 32 trees (the trees will now provide shade and greenery in their school)
