Penguin Prize for African Writing Update!

10th March 2010

Penguin Books has been both delighted and overwhelmed at the response we received for the Penguin Prize for African Writing. We received an unanticipated number of entries: around 250 manuscripts were submitted for the Fiction award and 50 for the Non-Fiction award, most of which were received just before the cut off date at the end of January. Entries have come from countries all across Africa, including Ghana, Nigeria, Botswana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Malawi and South Africa.

In our search for the best writing out of Africa, and in light of the astonishing number of entries received, Penguin Books had to extend the assessment time for manuscripts. The announcement of the shortlist will therefore take place in June 2010 and will be displayed on our website. The winners will still be announced in September.

We have been thrilled with the tremendous response to this inaugural prize and wish to express our sincere gratitude to all the writers from across the African continent who put fingertips to keyboards and hit the “send” button in order to get their manuscripts to us on deadline.

He is the author of over twenty books, and is best remembered for the bestseller Supernature, which was first published in 1973 and would go on to sell over 750 000 copies.

Very happy Li Cunxin fans who attended this event share their gratitude towards Penguin Books, The Raymond Ackerman Foundation as well as Publicist Janine Daniels who helped make the event the success that it was.

Thank you so much for the wonderful opportunity of meeting and listening to Li Cunxin last night – a very moving experience indeed. Penguin and the Raymond Ackerman Foundation are to congratulated for enriching our lives this way. I teach High School History and the Chinese Communist Revolution and it is this sort of real life experience through books and film that deeply touches the lives of students.

I am so grateful to have been a winner of 2 omvie tickets, and despite a raapidly-worsening cold, hhung on to see that absolutely stunning rerunion with his parents on-stage in Washington DC.

What an utterly remmarkable human is Li Cunxin! He is a Ballet Dancer without peer, and possibly also in stoooooooock-broking! But, above all, he is one of the greatest dancers in liofe.

Hi Janine,

We attended the film premier of “Mao’s last dancer” last night at the NuMetro Hyde Park!

My wife and I would just like to say “THANK YOU VERY MUCH” – it was a very special evening, with Li there to add context to the film! I had read the book a few years ago, but my wife had no expectations – but she ended up sobbing!

Once again – please pass on our wishes and thanks to Li Cunxin and the Ackerman Foundation.
