Penguin Books South Africa is delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of two of Etienne van Heerdenâ€™s recent and most significant works: In Loveâ€™s Place and Thirty Nights in Amsterdam, as well as the reissue in paperback, in brand new livery, of two of his earlier novels â€“ Ancestral Voices and Leap Year, both of which have been unavailable in English for some time.

First published in Afrikaans as In stede van die liefde (2005), In Loveâ€™s Place has been translated by Leon de Kock. The novel won the 2005 ATKV Prize for Prose and the 2006 WA Hofmeyr Prize for Afrikaans literature.Â It is Van Heerdenâ€™s sixth novel and is set against a backdrop that the author knows well, moving among the rich landscape of the Cape winelands to the arid edges of the Karroo, as well asÂ the seedier parts of Cape Townâ€™s Atlantic seaboard. It tells the story of Christian, an internet-based art dealer, a man with secrets and a life that becomes ever more complicated.

Van Heerdenâ€™s most recent novel was the critically acclaimed 30 Nagte in Amsterdam (2008), now translated into English by Michiel Heyns. Thirty Nights in Amsterdam in Afrikaans won the 2009 M-Net Literary Award and the 2008 University of Johannesburg Creative Writing in Afrikaans prize. Henk de Melker is an assistant in the museum of a small town in the Eastern Cape. When he travels to Amsterdam to claim his inheritance of a house from his estranged Aunt Zan he confronts not only Zan’s past but begins to look differently at his own.

Acknowledged as one of South Africaâ€™s great writers, Etienne van Heerden is widely regarded as a key literary figure in a generation of Afrikaans artists who contributed significantly to opening up the Afrikaner psyche to change. During the eighties he was a member of a group of Afrikaans writers who secretly met the then banned ANC and several exiled writers at the famous Victoria Falls Writersâ€™ Conference held in Zimbabwe.

He has written eleven novels, which have won numerous awards, including The Hertzog Prize, the M-Net Award, the CNA Award (twice), the ATKV Prize (four times), the Rapport Prize for Prose, the Perskor Prize for Juvenile Literature, the EugÃ¨ne Marais Prize, the J&B Young Achievers Award, the Klein Karoo Festival award (twice) and the WA Hofmeyr Prize for Afrikaans literature.

Ancestral Voices, the English translation of Toorberg, was first published in 1989 and has been out of print in its English edition since 2001. This book gives us a vision of the Afrikaner inheritance through the eyes of the insular Moolman family. This was Van Heerdenâ€™s first international breakthrough novel.Â It won all the major Afrikaans literary awards in South Africa when it appeared, and established its author as the leading novelist of his generation.

Leap Year, first published in Afrikaans as Die stoetmeester, was originally published in 1997 and this English edition has been out of print for more than a decade.Â It was nominated for the 1999 International Dublin Literary Award.Â Set against the backdrop of the Eastern Cape, in a time of great political upheaval, Van Heerden tells the story of the Butler family and the impact that their unusual breed of goats has on their lives and the members of their farming community.

As one of the leading publishers of literary fiction in South Africa, Penguin Booksâ€™ CEO Alison Lowry says: â€˜We believe that Etienne will fit perfectly into our expanding and award-winning literary list. At last Ross Garland the producer of Spud the movie has stepped out of the the boardroom/bathroom for some long awaited news on the long awaited Spud movie. So all you future movie stars and buffs out there, pay close attention because we might never hear from the man again.

I see John has been insulting me on his blog for my procrastination.

So here is an update for your blogging delight.

Spud the movie feels like it has passed its watershed moment in its journey towards being made. We have a real international star on board to play the GUV. Iâ€™m hoping to be able to reveal his name in the coming weeks. I see that BBC is doing reruns of his top tv show at the moment.

On the back of this news, the money to make the film is starting to piece itself together. As soon as I get confirmation that all is on track for our target shoot date of December we will be rolling out our casting for all the teenage roles, both at certain schools around the country and online. I wish we could do a full on Idols style process because I have no doubt the talent out there will be overwhelming but with the usual limitations of money we are going to have to be smart to give everyone a chance to have a go at auditioning for the film. So we will also launch a web process where people can go online and try out that way. Just like Spudâ€™s audition for Oliver…the long shot at fame and fortune.

Other news is that the same Hollywood distributor that distributed â€œTsotsiâ€ to the world has picked up the film, which certainly confirms our view that the film has international legs.

Meanwhile we slowly put together the behind the scenes team â€“ cinematographer, editor, art director â€“ who will all play their part in the 57 person crew who will ultimately make the film what it is. And we are also starting to look at the more mundane issues of where the crew will all stay in the KZN Midlands whilst we shoot, and whether our star should stop over in Rio or London on his way from LA.

And for me, the producer, itâ€™s the usual thing of trying to hold it altogether in the face of constant questions about whether anything we are doing is right â€“ is the budget too high? Is the budget too low? Is the script too commercial? Is the script commercial enough? I too would love to disappear in Vietnam for two months but alas I am not a famous author.

Armed only with his irascible Scottish sidekick, Patrick and a renegade township mongrel named Exhibit A, the threesome head into the Karoo to investigate the case. From corrupt policemen to small-town discrimination and a local gossip grapevine, the scruffy but good-hearted Georgie battles his way through the reality of dealing with a rape case in the post-apartheid Rainbow Nation.

Patrick, who eats his way through a seemingly endless stream of junk food, studiously avoids paying restaurant bills and consciously peppers his speech with Scottish burrs like â€œfooking hell, laddieâ€, loves nothing more than a fight against the establishment. Exhibit A, the cocky mongrel with his own sense of justice who adopts Georgie, charms everyone from Georgieâ€™s fashionconscious, PA Chesray, who is more concerned with his facial piercings and Paris Hiltonâ€™s latest dramas than his work, to flight attendant Clive and the well-muscled Lou, Georgieâ€™s gay flatmates.

But itâ€™s not as cut-and-dried as it looks, Ninaâ€™s claim that she was raped is questioned when forensic evidence confl icts with her version of events and Georgie and Patrick have to decide if the many holes in Ninaâ€™s story and her dubious past are enough to stop them from going ahead with the case.
