2010 Man Booker Prize

Penguin Books South Africa is proud to announce that author, Damon Galgut, has been shortlisted for the 2010 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

About the Man Booker Prize:
For over four decades the prize – the leading literary award in the English speaking world – has brought recognition, reward and readership to the outstanding new novels of the year. Wednesday, 27 July, saw the announcement of the 13 books on the longlist, and today, 7 September, the Chair of judges, Sir Andrew Motion, announced the six shortlisted authors for the 2010 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
The winner will be announced on Tuesday, 12 October, at a dinner at London’s Guildhall.

About the book:

A young man makes three journeys that take him through Greece, India and Africa. He travels lightly, simply. To those who travel with him and those whom he meets on the way – including a handsome, enigmatic stranger, a group of careless backpackers and a woman on the edge – he is the Follower, the Lover and the Guardian. Yet, despite the man’s best intentions, each journey ends in disaster. Together, these three journeys will change his whole life. A novel of longing and thwarted desire, rage and compassion, In a Strange Room is the hauntingly beautiful evocation of one man’s search for love, and a place to call home.

About the author:
Damon Galgut was born in Pretoria in 1963, and now lives in Cape Town. He wrote his first novel, A Sinless Season, when he was seventeen. His other books include Small Circle of Beings, The Beautiful Screaming of Pigs, The Quarry, The Good Doctor and The Impostor. The Good Doctor was short-listed for the 2003 Man Booker Prize, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Dublin/IMPAC Award. The Impostor won the 2008 University of Johannesburg Prize for Creative Writing, and was short-listed for the 2009 M-Net Literary Prize and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for the African Region.

Another Prestigious Accolade for Damon Galgut

â€œThe Loverâ€ one of the three parts that make up Damon’s new book In A Strange Room, which Penguin Books SA will be publishing next year, has been chosen for The O Henry Award. This is theÂ only annual award, in the United States, given to short stories of exceptional merit.

Throughout the year, magazine editors across the United States and Canada, submit their issues to The O. Henry Prize Stories series editor, Laura Furman. From the multitude of stories submitted, the editor chooses twenty winners that stand out above the rest and up to fifteen additional pieces highlighted in the collection as the list of recommended stories. Each juror then reads the twenty winning stories in manuscript form, without knowledge of author names or publications. Without consulting one another, they each select their favourite and write a short essay about what led them to their choice.

The twenty winning stories are then published in an annual collection called PEN/ O. Henry Prize Stories. â€œThe Loverâ€ will be published in the PEN/ O. Henry Prize Stories 2010 which will be released in May next year.

The Impostor

In 2006, the University of Johannesburg instituted two prizes for Creative Writing in English:

The UJ Prize for the best creative work in English
The UJ Prize for the best creative debut work in English.

The value of the 2008 prize for best creative work in English is R60 000.

The UJ Prize is awarded to the writer of the best original creative work in English published in the previous calendar year. The prize was deliberately not linked to a specific genre, the idea being to open the prize to as many forms of creative writing as possible.

The selection panel comprised the following seven members: four members of the UJ Department of English; two academics from other universities; and one member from the media industry.

Alison Lowry, CEO of Penguin Books South Africa says, “As Damon Galgut’s international reputation as a writer grows strongly, this recognition in his home market of a novel as important as we believe The Impostor to be in South African literature, is welcome indeed. We salute him and Penguin is proud to be his publisher.”

About the book

When Adam moves into the abandoned house on the dusty edge of town, he is hoping to recover from the loss of his job and his home in the city. But when he meets Canning – a shadowy figure from his childhood – and Canning’s enigmatic and beautiful wife, a sinister new chapter in his life begins. Canning has inherited a vast fortune and a giant folly in the veld, a magical place of fantasy and dreams that seduces Adam and transforms him absolutely, violently – and perhaps for ever.

Damon Galgut was born in Pretoria in 1963. When he was six years old he was diagnosed with cancer and his love of storytelling developed at this time as he lay convalescing in his hospital bed.Â Galgut studied drama at the University of Cape Town.Â He was only 17 when his debut novel, A Sinless Season, was published.Â His battle with cancer was given fictional form in his next book, a collection of short stories called Small Circle of Beings (1988).Â The Beautiful Screaming of Pigs (1991) won the CNA Prize.Â The Quarry (1995) was made into a feature film, which went on to win prizes on the international film festival circuit.Â However, it was not until the publication of The Good Doctor in 2003 that Galgut found a far wider audience.Â The Good Doctor was short-listed for The Man Booker Prize 2003 and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 2004.
