South Africa 22nd April 2009 |
|
April 22nd is international Earth Day and in South Africa it is also the day that millions of South Africans will be lining up to vote in the country’s 4th Democratic Elections. Penguin Books would like to put forward two of it’s most talked about books this year in recognition of the day’s dual significance.
The first book is Going Green by well loved weatherman and climatologist Simon Gear. This book offers bite sized but very informative pieces of information regarding how best to do our bit towards protecting our environment and planet. Simon Gear has divided the book up into 365 ways to Change our World, which translates to doing at least one environmentally friendly activity everyday. So what better way to celebrate Earth Day than with this wonderfully inspiring and practical little book.

Our second book is called South Africa’s Brave New World by well known writer and academic RW Johnson. The book provides an informative account of South Africa as it emerged from the shadow of Apartheid to become the shining hope of reconciliation and democracy in Africa. RW Johnson challenges the promise of a utopian rainbow nation and exposes South Africa's current state as one characterised by disillusion and disappointment. The book has been labelled controversial and pessimistic for it's obvious criticism of the current government, however if anything it is a thought provoking and challenging must read.
